Stroke disease is the third leading cause of mortality in the UK. Among survivors of acute events it is a major cause of morbidity and the leading cause of disability. The impact of stroke extends beyond patients and their families by placing a significant financial burden upon the health and social services (an estimated £7 billion/year). With an ageing population this burden is set to increase.
